Q1 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
Chlamydiasis, a common sexually transmitted infection that is often asymptomatic in its early stage, is caused by which organism?
Answer: (A)
Principle: each STD has a specific causative organism, and the NCERT table pairs them. Chlamydiasis is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Syphilis is caused by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum, trichomoniasis by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis, and gonorrhoea by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Since the question asks for the organism causing chlamydiasis, the answer is Chlamydia trachomatis. Learn the pairings as a list, and remember that several STDs are bacterial but not all of them share one organism.

Which of the following is the correct sequence of steps in the IVF procedure, from hormonal treatment of the female to placing the embryo in the uterus?
Answer: (A)
IVF is a laboratory-based sequence. First the female is given hormones (superovulation) to produce several ova, which are then retrieved. The ova are fertilised with sperm in vitro, the resulting embryo is cultured until it reaches the early cleavage stage, and finally it is transferred into the uterus. Any option that moves fertilisation into the body, or puts transfer before culture, breaks this order.
Q3 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
A woman has non-functional ovaries and receives donor ova from an egg bank. Her husband's sperm fertilises these donor ova in vitro, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the wife's uterus, where the pregnancy develops. Which statement correctly describes the child's parentage?
Answer: (A)
Principle: genetic parentage follows the gamete providers, while the gestational mother is the woman who carries the pregnancy. Here the sperm comes from the husband and the ovum from the donor, so the child is genetically related to both of them. The wife's uterus supports development only. Students who assign parentage by who gave birth or who supplied the uterus will choose the other options.
Q4 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act of 1994 in India was enacted mainly to prevent which practice?
Answer: (A)
Principle: prenatal diagnostic tests can be misused to identify the sex of the foetus and then terminate female foetuses. Application: the PNDT Act prohibits sex determination through such tests, in order to stop female foeticide and correct the falling child sex ratio.
Q5 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
An emergency contraceptive pill is taken within 72 hours after unprotected coitus. Which mechanism best describes its action?
Answer: (A)
Principle: emergency contraceptives are hormonal and work mainly before fertilisation or implantation by delaying or preventing ovulation and interfering with fertilisation or early implantation. Application: the time window (within 72 hours) matters because the drug must act before conception is established. The options describing spermicidal action, abortion, and surgical blockage each name a different method.
Q6 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
A man undergoes vasectomy. Several months later, which of the following is the most accurate description of his condition relative to before the procedure?
Answer: (B)
Principle: vasectomy surgically interrupts the vas deferens, the duct that carries sperm from the epididymis to the urethra. Application: sperm are still made in the seminiferous tubules and are reabsorbed or stay in the epididymis, so the ejaculate is sperm-free. Endocrine function of the testes and the secretions of the seminal vesicles and prostate are not removed, so testosterone and semen volume stay close to normal. Students who answer that testosterone falls are confusing the removal of an excretory duct with removal of the gonad's endocrine tissue. Students who answer that sperm are present but immobile are applying a chemical-spermicide mechanism to a physical block.
Q7 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
Trichomoniasis, an STD in humans, is caused by which type of organism?
Answer: (C)
Principle: the STDs are caused by bacteria, viruses, protozoans and, in one common case, fungi, and each disease has its own agent. Apply it: trichomoniasis is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan, so the correct group is protozoan parasite.
Q8 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
In Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT), which material is transferred into the fallopian tube of the female?
Answer: (B)
Principle: ART procedures differ by where fertilisation happens and where the product is placed. In ZIFT, the ovum and sperm are combined in vitro, fertilisation occurs outside the body, and the zygote or early embryo (up to 8 blastomeres) is transferred into the fallopian tube. In GIFT, unfertilised gametes are transferred into the tube, so fertilisation happens inside the body. In IUT, embryos with 16 or more blastomeres are placed in the uterus. Applying this: the transferred material in ZIFT is the zygote or early embryo at the 8-blastomere stage, which is option B.
Q9 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
Hepatitis-B, an STD that can also spread through contaminated blood, is compared with AIDS for the purpose of prevention. Which statement correctly identifies a difference between the two that is relevant to controlling spread at the population level?
Answer: (A)
Principle: hepatitis-B is a viral STD listed in NCERT among infections spread by sexual contact and blood. It is transmitted through blood and body fluids and can cause chronic liver damage. Its causative agent is a virus, not a bacterium, and it is preventable by a vaccine that is routinely given. AIDS, caused by HIV, has no vaccine in routine use. Application: because a vaccine is available for hepatitis-B and not for AIDS, the statement that vaccination is a usable population-level control for hepatitis-B but not for AIDS is correct. The other options each rest on a misassignment of the causative agent or transmission route, which is the typical error students make when they group all STDs together.
Q10 · Zoology · Reproductive Health
In amniocentesis, the fluid withdrawn from the amniotic cavity contains foetal cells. What is the main source of these cells?
Answer: (B)
Principle: the amniotic fluid surrounds the foetus and contains cells shed by the foetus, so these cells carry the foetal genotype. Application: the cells are collected by needle, cultured, and karyotyped. Maternal blood, endometrial secretions, and sperm are not the source of the foetal cells analysed, so each of those options reflects a confusion about what the sample contains.
