Q1 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
Bioluminescence, the ability of a living organism to emit light, is well marked in the members of:
Answer: (D)
Ctenophores, the sea walnuts or comb jellies, are exclusively marine animals with eight rows of ciliated comb plates. Bioluminescence is well marked in them. Pleurobrachia and Ctenoplana are examples.
Q2 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
Which statement about the heart of living reptiles is correct?
Answer: (A)
The heart of living reptiles is generally three-chambered, with two atria and one ventricle that is partly divided by a septum. Crocodilians are the exception, with a four-chambered heart and a complete ventricular septum. The correct answer depends on knowing that the chamber count varies within the class, not that every reptile matches birds and mammals.
Q3 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
The carapace of a turtle is a dome-shaped shell covering the back. Which statement correctly describes how the carapace is formed?
Answer: (B)
Principle: the turtle shell has two layers. The inner bony carapace is formed by fusion of ribs and some vertebrae with dermal bone plates, and the outer horny layer consists of scutes derived from the epidermis. Applying this to the question, the only correct description is that the shell is skeletal, formed from ribs and vertebrae together with dermal bone. The distractors describe a purely epidermal shell, a sternal origin borrowed from birds, or a pelvic origin, none of which match the anatomy of Testudines.
Q4 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
Which feature is found in reptiles, birds and mammals but absent in amphibians?
Answer: (C)
The defining embryonic adaptation of amniotes (reptiles, birds, mammals) is the amnion, a fluid-filled membrane that protects the embryo and allows independence from water. Amphibians lack it, which is why they need water for egg development. Lungs and three-chambered hearts occur in amphibians, so they do not distinguish the groups. External fertilisation is typical of many amphibians, not of amniotes.
Q5 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
Which feature is shared by reptiles, birds and mammals but absent in amphibians and fishes?
Answer: (D)
The amniotes (reptiles, birds and mammals) share the embryonic membranes amnion, chorion and allantois. The amnion encloses the embryo in fluid, which protects it from drying, and it is the reason these groups could leave water and reproduce on land. Amphibians and fishes do not produce them. When a question asks what a group shares, look for a feature that is part of the group's definition, not a feature present in only some members.
Q6 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
Which statement correctly describes the digestive system of Taenia, a parasitic platyhelminth living in the small intestine of its host?
Answer: (A)
Platyhelminthes are acoelomate. Their body is filled with parenchyma, and they lack a body cavity and an alimentary canal in cestodes. Taenia, the tapeworm, is an endoparasite that absorbs digested food from the host intestine through its body surface. Fasciola has an incomplete gut with one opening, while the nematode Ascaris has a complete gut. Students should identify the cestodes as the group with no gut at all and separate them from both the trematodes and the nematodes.
Q7 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
Which of the following arthropods is called a living fossil?
Answer: (A)
Limulus, the king crab, is a living fossil. Apis, Bombyx and Laccifer are economically important insects, Anopheles, Culex and Aedes are vectors, and Locusta is a gregarious pest.
Q8 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
In male cartilaginous fishes, what are the claspers, and what is their function?
Answer: (B)
Claspers are a distinct feature of male Chondrichthyes. They are the posterior (pelvic) fins modified into rod-like structures. During mating, the male inserts a clasper into the female's cloaca, which allows internal fertilisation. Locate the structure by its fin position and its role, then match. Remember that the pelvic pair is the posterior pair.
Q9 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
In Ascaris, the body cavity is called a pseudocoelom. Which statement best explains why it is not a true coelom?
Answer: (C)
A coelom is a body cavity completely lined by mesoderm, giving a peritoneum on both the body wall and the gut wall. In a pseudocoelom, the mesoderm is present only in parts (for example, as muscle layers in the body wall), so the cavity is not fully mesoderm-lined. Aschelminthes such as Ascaris are pseudocoelomates. Keep this cavity distinction separate from the body symmetry and germ-layer ideas.
Q10 · Zoology · Animal Kingdom
Which of the following animal groups possesses a complete digestive system, with a separate mouth and anus?
Answer: (A)
Principle: a complete digestive system has separate mouth and anus, allowing one-way food passage. Annelids have this, while Platyhelminthes, Cnidaria and Porifera lack it, having either a single opening or no true gut.
