Q1 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
Which cranial nerve is the principal nerve of the parasympathetic division, supplying the heart, lungs and much of the digestive tract?
Answer: (C)
The parasympathetic outflow from the brain runs mainly through the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X). It supplies the heart, lungs, and the gut from the oesophagus to the colon. The other cranial nerves listed serve the senses of smell and vision and the face, not the visceral organs.
Q2 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
In a resting neuron, which statement correctly describes the distribution of Na⁺ and K⁺ across the membrane?
Answer: (C)
At rest the extracellular fluid contains a high concentration of Na⁺ and a low concentration of K⁺, while the cytoplasm contains a high concentration of K⁺ and a low concentration of Na⁺. The Na⁺–K⁺ pump maintains this distribution. The gradients create the electrochemical forces that move these ions during the action potential, so knowing which side each ion is concentrated on is needed to predict the direction of movement.
Q3 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
In a typical spinal nerve, which pair of statements about the location of neuronal cell bodies is correct?
Answer: (A)
Principle: the spinal cord's grey matter is H-shaped, with the dorsal horn receiving sensory input and the ventral horn containing motor neuron cell bodies. Sensory neurons' cell bodies form the dorsal root ganglion just outside the cord. Application: a sensory neuron's cell body is outside the cord in the ganglion, but a motor neuron's cell body is inside the ventral horn. Only the option matching both locations is correct.
Q4 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
Which statement correctly describes the sodium-potassium pump in the membrane of a resting neuron?
Answer: (A)
The sodium-potassium pump is an ATP-driven active transporter. It pumps three Na⁺ out and two K⁺ in per cycle, maintaining the ionic gradients that underlie the resting potential. Remember: energy is required, sodium goes out, potassium comes in, and the ratio is 3:2.
Q5 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
Which statement about the enteric nervous system is correct?
Answer: (A)
Principle: the visceral nervous system includes the autonomic nerves plus the enteric nervous system. The enteric system is a set of plexuses (such as those lying between the gut muscle layers) that regulate the motility and secretion of the gut. It can act with a degree of independence from the CNS, although autonomic input modifies its activity. Recall where the neurons are located and what they control, and the other options fall away.
Q6 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
An aircraft descends rapidly while a passenger's Eustachian tube stays blocked, so the air in the middle ear cannot equalise with the pressure of the cabin air outside. Compared with the external air pressure, what is the pressure in the middle ear, and in which direction is the tympanic membrane displaced?
Answer: (A)
The middle ear is an air-filled cavity connected to the nasopharynx through the Eustachian tube, which equalises pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane. If the tube is blocked, the air in the middle ear stays at the pressure it had before the change. When the aircraft descends, the external pressure rises, so the middle-ear pressure becomes lower than the external pressure. The unbalanced force pushes the tympanic membrane inward, reducing its vibration and the efficiency of sound transmission through the ossicles. Work through it in two steps: first determine the direction of the external pressure change, then determine the side the membrane is pushed toward.
Q7 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
Which part of the human eye controls the amount of light entering the eye by changing the size of the pupil?
Answer: (A)
Light enters through the pupil, which is a hole in the iris. In bright light the circular muscles of the iris contract to constrict the pupil, and in dim light the radial muscles contract to dilate it. The iris therefore regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
Q8 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
Which of the meninges lies immediately beneath the bony skull and is thick and fibrous?
Answer: (C)
Principle: the cranial and spinal meninges are three protective membranes arranged from outside to inside as dura mater, arachnoid and pia mater. The dura mater is the outermost, thick and fibrous layer and is in direct contact with the skull and vertebrae. Application: the outermost, thick, fibrous layer beneath the skull is the dura mater. Note that the arachnoid is the thin middle layer and the pia mater is the innermost, delicate layer.
Q9 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
Olfactory receptors in the nasal epithelium of humans are best described as which type of neurons, with their axons forming the olfactory nerve?
Answer: (A)
Olfactory receptors are modified bipolar neurons in the olfactory epithelium. Each has a dendrite projecting to the surface and an axon that forms part of the olfactory nerve. The axons pass through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone and synapse in the olfactory bulb. Identify the neuron type from its location and its direction of signal travel.
Q10 · Zoology · Neural Control and Coordination
In the human nose, where are the olfactory receptor cells located?
Answer: (A)
Smell is detected by olfactory receptor neurons located in the olfactory epithelium at the roof of the nasal cavity. Dissolved odorant molecules bind to receptors on their cilia, generating impulses that travel along the olfactory nerve. The respiratory epithelium around the nasal passage does not have these receptors, and taste is a separate sense handled by taste buds.
