Example: 140 right and 25 wrong with 15 blank scores 140 × 4 − 25 × 1 = 535. Those 25 wrong answers cost 125 marks in all — 100 they could have earned, and 25 taken away. For when guessing is worth it, read negative marking: when to guess.

About NEET marking.
How is NEET marked?
Each correct answer gets +4, each wrong answer −1, and a question left blank 0. The paper has 180 questions — 45 each in Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology — so the maximum is 720.
Is there negative marking in NEET 2027?
NEET (UG) has used −1 for a wrong answer in every recent year, including 2026. The NEET 2027 bulletin, usually published early in the year, will confirm it; this page will be updated if anything changes.
Does a blank answer lose marks?
No. A question you leave unanswered scores 0. Only a wrong answer costs a mark.
Should I guess in NEET?
A blind guess among four options is worth +0.25 on average (one chance in four of +4, three in four of −1). If you can rule out even one option, the average rises to about +0.67. Guess when you can eliminate something; leave it when you cannot and the question is long.
Is all of NEET compulsory now?
Yes. Since 2025 there is no optional Section B: all 180 questions are compulsory, in 180 minutes.
