Electrostatics for NEET: how many questions, and which topics to do first

Asked 27 times in seven NEET papers, about 3.9 a paper, and in every paper. Capacitance and field and potential carried more than half. The count, and how to study it.

Electrostatics was asked 27 times in the seven NEET papers we counted from 2018 to 2026, about 3.9 questions a paper. At +4 each, that is about 15 marks a paper. It appeared in every paper, and two topics carried more than half of it: capacitance (8) and electric field and potential (7).

How many Electrostatics questions come in NEET?

YearQuestions
20182
20204
20216
20234
20244
20253
20264

From 2021 to 2024 each paper had 200 questions, with a choice in Section B, so those counts are not exactly like for like. Plan for about four.

Which topics are asked most?

TopicQuestions in seven papersShare of the chapter
Capacitance830%
Electric field and potential726%
Electric dipole519%
Conductors and dielectrics415%
Gauss's law27%
Coulomb's law14%

Coulomb's law is where most books begin, but it was asked directly only once. You still need it, because everything else is built on it.

How should I study this chapter?

  1. Read both NCERT chapters. Our chapter covers Electric Charges and Fields, and Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance, in Class 12.
  2. Learn field and potential together. Practise moving between them, and adding them up for several charges.
  3. Spend real time on capacitance. It is the largest topic. Practise series and parallel combinations, the effect of a dielectric, and the energy stored.
  4. Then do dipoles. Five questions in seven papers is enough to learn the field, the potential and the torque properly.
  5. Log every wrong answer. A mistake book will show whether you lost the mark on the idea or on a sign.

Every year's count and practice questions with explanations are on the Electrostatics PYQ page. For how it compares with the rest of the subject, see NEET Physics chapter-wise weightage.

How we counted

We sorted every question in the seven NEET papers we hold (2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, the last being the 21 June re-examination) by chapter and topic. Another count may place a question differently, so treat the figures as a guide to where the weight has been, not a forecast of the next paper. NTA does not publish chapter weightage.
