Integral Calculus for JEE Advanced: how many questions, and which topics to do first

Asked 80 times in 38 JEE Advanced papers since 2008, about 2 a paper and 11% of Maths. Definite integrals, the fundamental theorem and area carried 86% of them.

Integral Calculus was asked 80 times in the 38 JEE Advanced papers we counted from 2008 to 2026. That is about 2 questions a paper and 11% of all Mathematics questions, and it appeared in every one of those 19 years. Three topics carried 86% of it: properties of definite integrals (30), the fundamental theorem of calculus (20) and area under simple curves (19).

The number moves between 2 and 8 with no steady trend. The last four years have been at the lower end, but four years is too few to plan around. Expect three or four.

JEE Advanced asks far more definite than indefinite integration. Methods such as substitution and by parts are rarely asked alone, but you need them to do everything else.

In what order should I study it?

  1. Methods first, and quickly. Substitution, by parts and partial fractions, until you do not have to stop and think about them.
  2. Then the properties of definite integrals. This is the largest topic. Practise noticing a symmetry or a substitution that changes the limits, before you start integrating.
  3. Then the fundamental theorem. Differentiating an integral with variable limits links this chapter to limits and differentiation, so questions often mix them.
  4. Then area. Draw the region first. Many mistakes come from the wrong limits, not the integration.
  5. Finish with mixed papers. JEE Advanced asks this chapter in several kinds of question, so practise multiple-correct and numerical versions.

How we counted

We sorted every question in the 38 JEE Advanced papers set from 2008 to 2026 by chapter and topic. Another count may place a question differently, so treat this as a guide to where the weight has been, not a forecast. The organising IITs do not publish chapter weightage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Integral Calculus important for JEE Advanced?

Yes. It carried 11% of Mathematics questions in our count, and it appeared in all 19 years.

Which topic in Integral Calculus should I start with?

After the basic methods, the properties of definite integrals. It carried 30 of the 80 questions.

Are indefinite integrals asked in JEE Advanced?

Rarely on their own: substitution and by parts together made 11 of the 80 questions. You still need the methods, because definite integrals depend on them.
