Electrostatics for JEE Advanced: how many questions, and how the topics have shifted

Asked 73 times in 36 JEE Advanced papers since 2008, it appeared in every year. Gauss's law led overall, but electric field and potential has led since 2016.

Electrostatics was asked 73 times in the 36 JEE Advanced papers we counted from 2008 to 2025. That is about 2 questions a paper and 11% of all Physics questions, the most of any Physics chapter in our count. It appeared in every one of those 18 years. The mix inside the chapter has changed, though: Gauss's law leads overall, but electric field and potential has led since 2016.

How many Electrostatics questions come in JEE Advanced?

2008645
2009439
2010347
2011443
2012640
2013340

2015440
2016336

2021238

2023234
2024534
2025432

Each year has two papers. The yearly number has moved between 2 and 6 with no clear trend, so plan for about four a year and do not read much into any one year.

Which topics are asked most?

TopicAll years, 2008 to 20252008 to 20152016 to 2025
Gauss's law23158
Electric field and potential21912
Capacitance1578
Electric dipole606
Conductors and dielectrics523
Coulomb's law312

Gauss's law made up nearly half the chapter in the first eight years and about a fifth in the last ten. It still matters, but if your practice comes mostly from old papers, you may be getting more of it than recent papers ask for. All six dipole questions in our count came after 2015.

In what order should I study it?

  1. Field and potential first. Superposition, and moving between field and potential, are used all through the chapter. They are also the largest topic in recent papers.
  2. Then Gauss's law. Learn to choose the surface from the symmetry, and to see when the law does not give the field directly.
  3. Then capacitance. Fifteen questions over the years, including dielectrics and combinations. It also links to the circuits chapter.
  4. Then dipoles and conductors. They are smaller, but they are quick to learn once field and potential are solid.
  5. Finish with mixed papers under time. JEE Advanced asks this chapter in several kinds of question, so practise multiple-correct and numerical versions, not only single-correct ones.

For how this fits with the rest of the subject, see JEE Advanced chapter-wise weightage. For how each kind of question is marked, see JEE Advanced marking explained.

How we counted

We sorted every question in the 36 JEE Advanced papers set from 2008 to 2025 by chapter and topic. This count does not include the 2026 papers. Another count may place a question differently, so treat this as a guide to where the weight has been, not a forecast. The organising IITs do not publish chapter weightage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Electrostatics important for JEE Advanced?

Yes. It has the most questions of any Physics chapter in our count, at 11% of Physics questions since 2008, and it appeared in every year.

Which Electrostatics topic should I start with?

Electric field and potential. It has the most questions since 2016 (12 of 39), and the other topics build on it.

Is Gauss's law still asked in JEE Advanced?

Yes. It had 8 questions from 2016 to 2025, about a fifth of the chapter. That is down from 15 of 34 in the eight years before.
