Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure is the most-asked Chemistry chapter in NEET. It was asked 24 times in the seven papers we counted from 2018 to 2026, about 3.4 questions a paper and 7% of Chemistry questions. At +4 each, that is about 14 marks a paper. It appeared in all seven papers, and no single topic dominates it.
How many questions come from Chemical Bonding?
| Year | Questions |
|---|---|
| 2018 | 5 |
| 2020 | 2 |
| 2021 | 3 |
| 2023 | 4 |
| 2024 | 4 |
| 2025 | 3 |
| 2026 | 3 |
From 2021 to 2024 each paper had 200 questions, with a choice in Section B, so those counts are not exactly like for like. Even so, the range is narrow, from 2 to 5. Plan for three or four.
Which topics are asked most?
| Topic | Questions in seven papers | Share of the chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Molecular orbital theory | 6 | 25% |
| VSEPR theory | 5 | 21% |
| Dipole moment and Fajans' rule | 5 | 21% |
| Hybridisation | 4 | 17% |
| Hydrogen bonding | 3 | 13% |
| Ionic bonding and lattice enthalpy | 1 | 4% |
Unlike many chapters, this one has no topic that you can do alone. Five of the six topics each carried at least 3 questions, so you need all of them except the last.
How should I study this chapter?
- Start with the NCERT chapter. Learn the definitions and the examples named in the book.
- Do hybridisation and VSEPR together. Practise going from a formula to a shape until you can do it quickly for the common molecules and ions.
- Then do dipole moment. It follows directly from shape, so it comes easily after step 2.
- Learn molecular orbital theory separately. It is the largest topic. Practise writing the configuration and working out bond order and magnetic behaviour for the common diatomic species.
- Finish with hydrogen bonding. It is short, and it is asked often enough to be worth a careful read.
- Log every wrong answer. A mistake book will show whether you lost the mark on the concept or on one exception.
Every year's count and practice questions with explanations are on the Chemical Bonding PYQ page. For how it compares with the rest of the subject, see NEET Chemistry chapter-wise weightage.
How we counted
We sorted every question in the seven NEET papers we hold (2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, the last being the 21 June re-examination) by chapter and topic. Another count may place a question differently, so treat the figures as a guide to where the weight has been, not a forecast of the next paper. NTA does not publish chapter weightage.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chemical Bonding important for NEET?
Yes. It is the most-asked Chemistry chapter in our count, at about 3.4 questions a paper, which is about 14 marks.
Which topic in Chemical Bonding is asked most?
