Electrostatics for JEE Main: how many questions, and which topics to do first

Asked 237 times in 111 JEE Main shift papers, about 2 a paper and tied heaviest in Physics. Capacitance and field and potential carried 58%. The count by year and topic.

Electrostatics was asked 237 times in the 111 JEE Main shift papers we counted from 2020 to 2025. That is about 2.1 questions a paper, or about 8.5 marks, and 7.6% of all Physics questions. It is tied with Optics as the most-asked Physics chapter in our count. Two topics carried 58% of it: capacitance (81) and electric field and potential (57).

How many Electrostatics questions come in JEE Main?

YearQuestionsShift papersAverage per paper
202032142.3
202154262.1
202253242.2
202324122.0
202439182.2
202535172.1

Every year averaged between 2.0 and 2.3 questions a paper. Few chapters are this steady.

Which topics are asked most?

TopicQuestionsShare of the chapter
Capacitance8134%
Electric field and potential5724%
Gauss's law3916%
Coulomb's law2812%
Electric dipole167%
Conductors and dielectrics167%

Capacitance alone is a third of the chapter. That is different from JEE Advanced, where Gauss's law has been the largest topic over the long run; see Electrostatics for JEE Advanced.

How should I study this chapter?

  1. Coulomb's law and superposition first. Adding forces and fields from several charges is the base of everything else.
  2. Then field and potential together. Practise moving between them, and the potential of the standard shapes.
  3. Spend the most time on capacitance. Series and parallel combinations, dielectrics, charge sharing when capacitors are joined, and the energy stored.
  4. Then Gauss's law. Choose the surface from the symmetry, and practise the standard results until you can use them without deriving them.
  5. Finish with mixed shift papers under time. The Electrostatics PYQ page has the count by year and practice questions.

For how this fits with the other heavy chapters, see high-weight JEE Main chapters for the last three months.

How we counted

We sorted every question in the 111 JEE Main shift papers we hold from 2020 to 2025 by chapter and topic. Another count may place a question differently, so treat these as a guide to where the weight is, not a forecast. NTA does not publish chapter weightage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Electrostatics important for JEE Main?

Yes. It is tied for the most-asked Physics chapter in our count, at about 2.1 questions, or 8.5 marks, a paper.

Which Electrostatics topic is asked most in JEE Main?
