Coordination Compounds was asked 176 times in the 111 JEE Main shift papers we counted from 2020 to 2025. That is about 1.6 questions a paper, or about 6 marks, and 5.6% of all Chemistry questions. Only Organic Chemistry: Some Basic Principles and Techniques was asked more often in Chemistry. One topic, crystal field theory, carried 83 of the 176 questions, or 47%.
How many Coordination Compounds questions come in JEE Main?
| Year | Questions | Shift papers | Average per paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 26 | 14 | 1.9 |
| 2021 | 33 | 26 | 1.3 |
| 2022 | 30 | 24 | 1.3 |
| 2023 | 25 | 12 | 2.1 |
| 2024 | 34 | 18 | 1.9 |
| 2025 | 28 | 17 | 1.6 |
The average has moved between 1.3 and 2.1 a paper. Expect one or two questions.
Which topics are asked most?
| Topic | Questions | Share of the chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Crystal field theory | 83 | 47% |
| Isomerism in complexes | 27 | 15% |
| Valence bond theory | 27 | 15% |
| Werner theory | 19 | 11% |
| Importance of coordination compounds | 11 | 6% |
| Nomenclature | 9 | 5% |
Crystal field theory questions usually ask for the number of unpaired electrons, the spin-only magnetic moment, the crystal field stabilisation energy, or the colour of a complex. They all come from the same skill: placing the d electrons correctly.
How should I study this chapter?
- Nomenclature and Werner theory first. Quick to learn, and you need them to read every other question.
- Then crystal field theory, properly. Practise d-electron counts, high and low spin with strong and weak field ligands, and the spin-only magnetic moment. This is nearly half the chapter.
- Then isomerism. Practise counting geometrical and optical isomers for the standard formulas.
- Then valence bond theory. Hybridisation and shape, which also helps you check crystal field answers.
- Finish with mixed shift papers under time. The Coordination Compounds PYQ page has the count by year and practice questions.
How we counted
We sorted every question in the 111 JEE Main shift papers we hold from 2020 to 2025 by chapter and topic. Another count may place a question differently, so treat these as a guide to where the weight is, not a forecast. NTA does not publish chapter weightage.
Frequently asked questions
Is Coordination Compounds important for JEE Main?
Yes. At about 1.6 questions a paper it is the second most-asked Chemistry chapter in our count.
Which topic in Coordination Compounds is asked most?
Crystal field theory, with 83 of 176 questions, nearly half the chapter.
Is nomenclature asked often?
Directly, rarely: 9 of 176 questions. But you need it to read the formulas in every other question.
