Q1 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In a corymb, the flowers are arranged so that their tops lie at about the same level. Which statement correctly explains how this is achieved?
Answer: (A)
A corymb is a racemose inflorescence in which the main axis is indefinite and the pedicels vary in length. The lower pedicels are the longest, so the flowers at different positions on the axis reach the same level. This length difference separates the corymb from the umbel, where all pedicels originate from one point.
Q2 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
Which of the following fruits is formed from an entire inflorescence, with each flower contributing a fruitlet that fuses with the others?
Answer: (A)
Fruit types depend on how many flowers and carpels contribute. A simple fruit comes from one ovary of one flower, such as tomato (berry) or mango (drupe). An aggregate fruit comes from many free carpels of one flower, as in strawberry. A multiple fruit comes from the whole inflorescence, as in pineapple and mulberry. Count the flowers before naming the fruit.
Q3 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In Lamiaceae (labiates) such as Ocimum or Leonotis, the flowers appear to form a whorl at each node. What is this cluster called, and how is it built?
Answer: (B)
Principle: a verticillaster is a false whorl. At each node of a labiate stem there is a pair of opposite, sessile cymes. Each cyme is dichasial: the central flower is terminal, and two lateral branches arise below it, each again ending in a flower. Because the paired cymes are crowded at one node, they look like a single whorl. A true whorl has all flowers arising from one point in one ring; a monochasial cyme gives only one branch per node. Hence the verticillaster is the dichasial cymes in opposite pairs.
Q4 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In the flower of a mustard plant (family Cruciferae), there are six stamens. Which arrangement describes them?
Answer: (A)
Cruciferae flowers are tetrapetalous, with six stamens. Two outer stamens are short and four inner stamens are long. This unequal arrangement is called tetradynamous. Note that the number six and the unequal lengths are what separate this family from the free or fused stamen patterns of other families.
Q5 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In Acacia, the petiole of the leaf becomes flattened, green, and laminar, and performs photosynthesis, while the true leaf blade is reduced or absent. What is this flattened petiole called?
Answer: (C)
Phyllodes are petioles that have become flattened, green, and leaf-like, and they perform photosynthesis after the leaf blade is lost or greatly reduced. Acacia is the standard example. Cladodes and phylloclades are stem structures, and a pulvinus is a motor organ at the base of a petiole. Identify the organ first: here the flattened organ is the petiole itself, not the stem.
Q6 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In a flower of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, a whorl of bracteoles lies outside and close to the calyx, and the stamens are fused into a single column around the style. Which combination correctly names the whorl and the androecium type?
Answer: (A)
Work through the two features separately. The bracteoles that sit outside the calyx are the epicalyx, a key marker of Malvaceae. Next, in Malvaceae the filaments of many stamens fuse into one tube around the style, which is monadelphous. Students often mix up the epicalyx with the involucre or the androecium types from Leguminosae, so keep each feature tied to its family.
Q7 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
A spike is an inflorescence in which flowers are sessile and borne along an elongated main axis. Which of the following plants has a spike as its inflorescence?
Answer: (A)
A spike has an unbranched main axis that is elongated, with sessile flowers arranged along it. Achyranthes fits this pattern. The key distinction is the presence or absence of pedicels and the simple or branched nature of the axis, which separates the spike from the raceme, capitulum and panicle.
Q8 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In grasses of the family Poaceae, what is the basic unit of the inflorescence?
Answer: (A)
The grass inflorescence is typically a spike, panicle or raceme of spikelets. Each spikelet is a small, compact unit with one or more florets enclosed at the base by glumes, and in many species the florets are further surrounded by lemma and palea. The spikelet, not the individual floret, is the basic unit of the grass inflorescence. Recall the family-specific feature first, then check the level of organisation being asked about.
Q9 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In grasses (Poaceae), the flowers are grouped into spikelets. Which statement correctly describes the structure of a spikelet and its bracts?
Answer: (B)
Principle: in Poaceae, the inflorescence is made of spikelets, each a small unit bearing one or more florets. The spikelet base carries two glumes, which are bracts. Each floret has a lemma (outer bract) and a palea (inner bract), and the florets are borne on a short rachilla. A student who thinks the spikelet is a single flower or confuses grass bracts with sepals or spathes will choose the wrong option. Identify the bracts and the florets to answer correctly.
Q10 · Botany · Morphology of Flowering Plants
In sunflower, a member of Compositae, the anthers of the five stamens are united into a tube around the style while the filaments remain free. What is this condition called?
Answer: (A)
In Compositae, such as sunflower, the anthers fuse into a ring around the style, while the filaments are free. This condition is syngenesious. Distinguish it from monadelphous, where the filaments are the parts that fuse.
