Q1 · Botany · Ecosystem
Which term refers to the total biomass of living organisms present in an ecosystem at a given moment, as opposed to the rate at which that biomass is produced?
Answer: (A)
Standing crop is the amount of living material present at one instant, measured in units like g m⁻² or kcal m⁻². Productivity always carries a time component (per unit time), so it is a flow. Standing crop is a snapshot; productivity is how fast that material is made.
Q2 · Botany · Ecosystem
Which term denotes the rate at which consumers convert the food they ingest into new organic biomass?
Answer: (D)
Productivity is defined as the rate of biomass formation per unit area per unit time. Primary productivity refers to producers, and secondary productivity refers to consumers, who gain biomass by converting ingested food into new tissue. Standing crop is a static quantity, not a rate.
Q3 · Botany · Ecosystem
In a shallow pond, the standing crop (biomass at a given moment) of phytoplankton is found to be smaller than the standing crop of zooplankton that feed on them. Which statement correctly explains this biomass inversion while the pyramid of net productivity for the pond remains upright?
Answer: (B)
Principle: a pyramid of biomass measures standing crop at one instant, while a pyramid of energy (productivity) measures energy per unit area per unit time. In aquatic systems phytoplankton have a very high turnover rate; they are consumed and regenerated so fast that a small standing crop can sustain a larger zooplankton standing crop. Thus the biomass pyramid can be inverted. Energy is never inverted, because each level must receive less energy than the level below it, so productivity per unit time still decreases from producers to consumers. Check each option against that principle: the size argument fails because standing crop depends on turnover, not body size; the sunlight argument fails because zooplankton are heterotrophs; the decomposer argument fails because excluding decomposers does not change the ranking of the trophic levels.
Q4 · Botany · Ecosystem
Which group of organisms is NOT represented as a trophic level in an ecological pyramid?
Answer: (C)
An ecological pyramid shows trophic levels, which are defined by feeding position: producers, then consumers at successive levels. Decomposers break down dead matter and do not occupy a feeding level in the food chain, so they are not shown as a bar. Producers, primary consumers and top carnivores are all trophic levels and do appear.
Q5 · Botany · Ecosystem
Detritus accumulates in waterlogged areas such as peat bogs much faster than it decomposes. Which statement best explains why peat, rather than mineral soil, forms in these conditions?
Answer: (A)
Decomposition by most decomposers is an aerobic process, and waterlogged or anaerobic conditions slow it down considerably. Detritus therefore accumulates faster than it is broken down, and partially decomposed organic matter builds up as peat. Oxygen is the limiting factor, not water's supply of oxygen, nitrogen, or mineral adsorption.
Q6 · Botany · Ecosystem
In a grassland, the herbivore level assimilates 4,000 kJ m^-2 yr^-1 from the plants it eats, and its respiration over the year uses 2,500 kJ m^-2 yr^-1. What is the net secondary productivity of this herbivore level, which is the energy available to the next trophic level?
Answer: (A)
Principle: productivity at any trophic level is measured after the organisms' own respiration. Gross secondary productivity is the energy assimilated from food. Net secondary productivity, the energy converted into new biomass, is what the next level can consume, and it equals gross minus respiratory loss. So NSP = 4,000 - 2,500 = 1,500 kJ m^-2 yr^-1. Gross productivity is an intake figure, not a transferable quantity, which is why the distractor equal to 4,000 is tempting but wrong.
Q7 · Botany · Ecosystem
A bulbul in an orchard feeds on ripe guavas in the morning and on caterpillars that eat the guava leaves in the evening. In this ecosystem the bulbul functions as:
Answer: (C)
A trophic level is a functional level, not a species as such, so a given species may occupy more than one trophic level in the same ecosystem at the same time. Feeding on fruit, the bird eats a producer and is a primary consumer; feeding on leaf-eating caterpillars, it eats a herbivore and is a secondary consumer.
Q8 · Botany · Ecosystem
Decomposers are generally not shown as a separate bar in ecological pyramids because:
Answer: (A)
Principle: a trophic level groups organisms by their feeding position. Decomposers feed on dead organic matter from all levels, so they do not fit into one level. Apply: since they cannot be assigned to a single bar, pyramids are usually drawn for producers and consumers only. The correct reason is the feeding position, not their abundance or habitat.
Q9 · Botany · Ecosystem
In a grassland, the net primary productivity (NPP) is 60,000 kJ m^-2 yr^-1 after producer respiration is subtracted, and the gross primary productivity (GPP) is 100,000 kJ m^-2 yr^-1. Assume all of the NPP is eaten by primary consumers and that each trophic level passes on exactly 10 per cent of the energy it receives to the next level. How much energy reaches the secondary consumers per year?
Answer: (C)
The base of any food chain is the NPP, which is GPP minus the energy producers use in their own respiration: 100,000 - 40,000 = 60,000 kJ m^-2 yr^-1. The 10 per cent law says each trophic level transfers about 10 per cent of its energy to the next. Primary consumers receive 10 per cent of 60,000 = 6,000. Secondary consumers receive 10 per cent of 6,000 = 600 kJ m^-2 yr^-1. Students who use GPP, or who count the transfers wrongly, get 1,000 or 60 or 6,000.
Q10 · Botany · Ecosystem
In an ecosystem, the flow of energy is:
Answer: (B)
Except for the deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystem, the sun is the only source of energy for all ecosystems. Energy flows unidirectionally, from the sun to producers and then to consumers, and at each transfer much of it is lost as heat, so it cannot cycle.
