Q1 · Botany · Biological Classification
Which storage carbohydrate do fungi accumulate as their reserve food, in a form similar to that found in animals?
Answer: (A)
Fungi are heterotrophic and absorb nutrients. Because they are not photosynthetic, their reserve food is stored as glycogen, similar to animals, along with oils. Starch is the plant-type reserve, and cellulose and chitin are structural polysaccharides. Distinguish storage molecules from structural ones when answering.
Q2 · Botany · Biological Classification
In the life cycle of Plasmodium vivax, the causative agent of malaria, where does sexual reproduction occur, leading to the formation of a zygote?
Answer: (A)
Plasmodium has a two-host life cycle. In humans, the parasite undergoes asexual reproduction, first in liver cells and then in red blood cells, where some merozoites develop into male and female gametocytes. When a female Anopheles mosquito takes a blood meal, the gametocytes mature into gametes in the mosquito gut. Fertilisation produces a zygote, which develops into an ookinete, then oocysts, and finally sporozoites that migrate to the salivary glands. So sexual reproduction occurs in the mosquito gut, while the human host carries only asexual stages.
Q3 · Botany · Biological Classification
In a basidiomycete, the mycelium is dikaryotic, with each hyphal cell holding two genetically distinct haploid nuclei of compatible mating types. Which sequence of nuclear events occurs in the basidium, and how many nuclei does each mature basidiospore typically carry?
Answer: (B)
Principle: in Basidiomycetes, sexual reproduction has three stages. Plasmogamy (fusion of two compatible haploid cells' cytoplasm) gives a dikaryotic mycelium with two haploid nuclei per cell, which persists for a long time. Karyogamy (fusion of the two nuclei) happens only in the basidium, creating a diploid nucleus. Meiosis immediately follows, producing four haploid nuclei that migrate into basidiospores. Application: the basidium is where karyogamy and meiosis occur, so the spores are haploid, each carrying one nucleus. Plasmogamy is not confined to the basidium, and the dikaryotic hyphae do not undergo meiosis.
Q4 · Botany · Biological Classification
The three steps of the sexual cycle of a fungus occur in the order:
Answer: (B)
The sexual cycle of fungi involves plasmogamy, the fusion of protoplasms of two gametes; then karyogamy, the fusion of the two nuclei; and then meiosis in the zygote, which gives haploid spores. In ascomycetes and basidiomycetes a dikaryotic stage comes between plasmogamy and karyogamy.
Q5 · Botany · Biological Classification
Fungi are important decomposers in ecosystems. Which statement best explains how a saprophytic fungus obtains nutrients from dead organic matter?
Answer: (A)
Principle: fungi are heterotrophic and absorptive. A saprophytic fungus secretes digestive enzymes into its substrate, breaks down complex organic material into simpler molecules, and absorbs these through the hyphal wall. This is extracellular digestion. Option A is correct. Option B describes phagocytosis, which fungi do not perform. Option C describes photosynthesis, which fungi lack. Option D describes chemosynthesis, which is a bacterial process and does not describe fungi.
Q6 · Botany · Biological Classification
In the five kingdom system, Euglena is placed in Kingdom Protista rather than Plantae. Which feature best justifies this placement?
Answer: (A)
Principle: in Whittaker's five kingdom system, Protista contains unicellular eukaryotes that are autotrophic or heterotrophic, often with flagella or pseudopodia. Application: Euglena is unicellular and eukaryotic, has a pellicle instead of a rigid wall, moves by flagella, and can be photosynthetic in light or heterotrophic in darkness. That combination places it in Protista. Chlorophyll alone does not decide placement, and absorptive nutrition alone does not make an organism a fungus.
Q7 · Botany · Biological Classification
In the lytic cycle of a bacteriophage, what event ends the infection?
Answer: (A)
Principle: the lytic cycle has five stages: attachment, entry, replication using host machinery, assembly of new phages, and release by lysis of the host. Application: the release step, with the host cell bursting, marks the end of the infection and distinguishes lysis from the dormant state of lysogeny.
Q8 · Botany · Biological Classification
Lichens reproduce vegetatively by small propagules that are detached from the thallus and grow into new lichens. Which statement correctly describes these propagules?
Answer: (A)
Lichens are a mutualistic association of a fungus (mycobiont) and an alga or cyanobacterium (phycobiont). Their common vegetative reproduction is by fragmentation, and the specialised fragments are soredia (powdery, with a few algal cells wrapped in hyphae) and isidia (small outgrowths of the thallus). Because both partners are present in each propagule, the fragment regrows into a complete lichen. Spores from the mycobiont alone would need to meet a compatible alga to form a new lichen, so they are not the propagules described. Algae do not make conidia, and the fungal partner is essential to every propagule.
Q9 · Botany · Biological Classification
In dinoflagellates, two unequal flagella arise from the cell and each lies in its own groove. Which statement correctly describes their arrangement and the cell covering?
Answer: (B)
Dinoflagellates are dinoflagellate protists with two flagella that are unequal in length and lie in separate grooves. The transverse flagellum wraps around the cell in the girdle called the cingulum, and the longitudinal flagellum trails back through the sulcus. Their outer covering is a theca made of cellulose plates embedded in the cell periphery. To answer, first recall where each flagellum sits, then recall the plate-based theca that distinguishes dinoflagellates from diatoms (silica frustule) and Euglenoids (protein pellicle). Only the option that places the transverse flagellum in the cingulum, the longitudinal in the sulcus, and cellulose theca plates is fully correct.
Q10 · Botany · Biological Classification
A mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association of a fungus with:
Answer: (D)
Fungi can live as symbionts: in association with algae as lichens, and with the roots of higher plants as mycorrhiza. Most other fungi are saprophytes, absorbing soluble organic matter from dead substrates, or parasites on living plants and animals.
