Q1 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A source emitting sound at 500 Hz moves at 20 m/s directly away from a stationary observer. The speed of sound in air is 340 m/s. What is the wavelength the observer measures for the sound wave, in metres?
Answer: (A)
For a source moving away from a stationary observer, the wavelength heard is lengthened by the distance the source travels during one period. The observed wavelength is lambda' = (v + vs)/f. With v = 340 m/s, vs = 20 m/s, and f = 500 Hz, the result is 360/500 = 0.72 m.
Q2 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A simple pendulum has time period T when its point of suspension is at rest. It is then placed in a lift that accelerates upward with acceleration g/3. What is its time period in the lift?
Answer: (D)
In a frame accelerating upward with acceleration a, the effective gravity is g_eff = g + a = 4g/3. Since T = 2π√(L/g_eff), T'/T = √(g/g_eff) = √(3/4) = √3/2. The period decreases because the effective gravity is larger.
Q3 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A tuning fork of frequency 400 Hz is held over a tube closed at its lower end, whose air column length can be varied. The first resonance is found at an air-column length of 20.0 cm and the next at 62.0 cm. What is the speed of sound in air obtained from these observations?
Answer: (A)
In a pipe closed at one end, resonance occurs when the effective column length is an odd multiple of λ/4. Adjacent resonances therefore differ by λ/2, because the added half-loop is a node-to-node (or antinode-to-antinode) spacing. The end correction e adds to each measured length equally and cancels in the difference. So λ/2 = 62.0 − 20.0 = 42.0 cm and λ = 84 cm = 0.84 m. Then v = fλ = 400 × 0.84 = 336 m s⁻¹. As a check, 20 + e = 21 cm gives e = 1 cm, and 62 + e = 63 cm = 3 × 21 cm, which is consistent. Using either length alone as an exact λ/4 or 3λ/4 gives wrong speeds.
Q4 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
Two pulses travelling in opposite directions along a string pass through each other. Which statement correctly describes what happens after they cross?
Answer: (A)
The principle of superposition states that where waves overlap, the resultant displacement at each point is the algebraic sum of the individual displacements. The overlap is temporary. After the waves pass through each other, each one continues as if the other had never been there, with its shape, amplitude and speed unchanged in a uniform medium. Pulses do not interact permanently or exchange energy during the crossing.
Q5 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A train sounding its whistle passes a stationary observer at constant speed along a straight track. The observer hears 660 Hz while the train approaches and 540 Hz while it recedes. Take the speed of sound as 340 m/s. What is the speed of the train?
Answer: (A)
The unknown true frequency f is eliminated by taking the ratio. Approaching: f₁ = fv/(v − v_s). Receding: f₂ = fv/(v + v_s). So f₁/f₂ = (v + v_s)/(v − v_s) = 660/540 = 11/9. Cross-multiplying gives 9v + 9v_s = 11v − 11v_s, so v_s = v/10 = 34 m/s.
Q6 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A block of mass M = 3 kg rests on a smooth horizontal table and is attached to a light spring of constant k = 200 N m⁻¹, whose other end is fixed. A second block of mass m = 1 kg is placed on top of it. The coefficient of static friction between the two blocks is 0.5. Take g = 10 m s⁻². The largest amplitude of SHM of the system for which the upper block does not slip is:
Answer: (B)
The two blocks oscillate together with ω² = k/(M + m) = 200/4 = 50 s⁻². The upper block gets its acceleration only from static friction, whose maximum is μmg. So its maximum acceleration without slipping is μg = 5 m s⁻². In SHM the maximum acceleration is ω²A. Setting ω²A ≤ μg gives A ≤ μg/ω² = 5/50 = 0.1 m. In general A_max = μg(M + m)/k = 10 cm.
Q7 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A block attached to a light spring oscillates on a smooth horizontal surface with a period of 1.0 s. If the mass of the block is quadrupled while the spring constant stays the same, what is the new period of oscillation?
Answer: (B)
For a mass m on a spring of force constant k, the angular frequency is ω = √(k/m) and the period is T = 2π√(m/k). The period depends on the square root of the mass. If the mass is multiplied by 4, the period is multiplied by √4 = 2. The original period is 1.0 s, so the new period is 2.0 s. Check: T ∝ √m, so the ratio of periods is √(4m/m) = 2.
Q8 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
In still air, where the speed of sound is 340 m/s, a source of fixed frequency moves directly towards a stationary observer at 68 m/s. The observer hears a certain raised frequency. Now the source is kept at rest and the observer moves directly towards it. At what speed must the observer move to hear exactly the same frequency as in the first case?
Answer: (A)
For the moving source, f' = f v/(v − u_s) = f × 340/272 = 1.25 f. For a moving observer and a stationary source, f' = f (v + w)/v. Setting (340 + w)/340 = 1.25 gives w = 0.25 × 340 = 85 m/s. This is larger than 68 m/s because the Doppler shift is not symmetric between source motion and observer motion.
Q9 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A source emitting 1500 Hz and an observer move along the same straight line in the same direction in still air. The source is behind the observer, moving at 40 m/s, and the observer moves away from it at 20 m/s. The speed of sound is 340 m/s. What frequency does the observer hear?
Answer: (D)
Take the positive direction from the source to the observer. Both move in this direction. The observer's motion along the sound's direction lowers the rate of crest arrival, so the numerator is v − v_o = 320. The source's motion towards the observer compresses the wavelength, so the denominator is v − v_s = 300. f' = 1500 × 320/300 = 1600 Hz. The source's closing speed outweighs the observer's retreat, so the net shift is upward.
Q10 · Physics · Oscillations and Waves
A string fixed at both ends vibrates in its 4th harmonic (the fourth normal mode). Counting the two nodes at the fixed ends, how many nodes are present along the string?
Answer: (A)
On a string fixed at both ends, a standing wave in the nth harmonic has wavelength λ = 2L/n. Nodes occur at every half wavelength, and the fixed ends are always nodes. So the number of nodes is n+1, with n antinodes between them. For the 4th harmonic, n = 4, which gives 5 nodes: two at the ends and three inside the string.
