10 Practical Organic Chemistry questions to practise.
Our own questions, written in the JEE Advanced pattern and checked, each with an explanation. Pick an option to see the answer.
Q1 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
A mixture of naphthalene and sand is to be separated. Which method is most suitable?
Answer: (A)
The separation depends on a physical property of one component. Naphthalene is volatile enough to sublime, so heating the mixture converts it directly into vapour. The vapour is condensed on a cold surface as pure crystals, while non-volatile sand remains. Liquid-based methods such as distillation and crystallisation from a solvent do not fit this mixture, and the melting-based option is not a practical purification route.
Q2 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
A bottle of diethyl ether that has stood in air for a long time contains explosive peroxides as an impurity. Which treatment safely removes them before the ether is used?
Answer: (C)
Principle: an impurity that cannot be removed by physical means is converted to a harmless, separable species. The peroxide (R–O–O–R') is an oxidising impurity, so it must be reduced. Fe2+ reduces it, giving alcohols and Fe3+ that stay in the aqueous layer. Distillation to dryness is dangerous, bicarbonate removes acids rather than peroxides, and an oxidant cannot reduce a peroxide.
Q3 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
A carbon-containing, sulphur-free organic compound is heated strongly with dry CuO, and the gas evolved is bubbled continuously and for a long time through a fixed volume of clear lime water. The clear solution finally obtained is then boiled. Which statement correctly describes the observations and their explanation?
Answer: (A)
CO₂ from the compound first reacts with Ca(OH)₂: Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃↓ + H₂O, which gives the milkiness that confirms carbon. With excess CO₂ and water, the precipitate dissolves: CaCO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O → Ca(HCO₃)₂ (soluble), so the solution clears. Ca(HCO₃)₂ is unstable on heating: Ca(HCO₃)₂ → CaCO₃↓ + CO₂↑ + H₂O, so boiling brings back the milkiness. A student who thinks CaCO₃ is permanently insoluble expects persistent milkiness. A student who thinks the hydrogencarbonate is thermally stable expects the solution to stay clear. A student who thinks CaCO₃ dissolves better when hot also expects it to stay clear.
Q4 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
In Lassaigne's sodium fusion, the organic compound is heated with metallic sodium. What is the main role of the sodium?
Answer: (A)
Covalently bonded elements do not give ionic reactions with reagents. Heating with sodium converts them into sodium salts (NaCN, Na2S, NaX), which are soluble in water and give the usual ionic tests. Sodium acts as a reducing agent during this conversion.
Q5 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
An alkaline aqueous solution contains sodium acetate and sodium 2-naphtholate. Carbon dioxide is bubbled through it to saturation and the solution is then shaken with diethyl ether. Take pKa values: acetic acid 4.8, carbonic acid (first dissociation) 6.4, 2-naphthol 9.5. Which species is mainly extracted into the ether layer?
Answer: (A)
A salt of a weak acid is protonated by any acid stronger than the weak acid. Carbonic acid (pKa 6.4) lies between acetic acid (4.8) and 2-naphthol (9.5). It therefore converts sodium 2-naphtholate to 2-naphthol (equilibrium constant about 10^3), but acetate is protonated to a very small extent (about 10^-1.6). The neutral 2-naphthol is insoluble in water and extracted by ether, whereas sodium acetate remains in the aqueous phase. This is a way of separating a phenol from a carboxylic acid after both have been converted to salts.
Q6 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
A hydrocarbon C4H6 decolourises bromine water and consumes 2 mol of H2 per mole on catalytic hydrogenation. It also gives a white precipitate with ammoniacal silver nitrate. The hydrocarbon is:
Answer: (A)
Unsaturation tests and hydrogen uptake do not separate the C4H6 isomers on their own. The silver test does. Only a terminal alkyne, with an acidic sp C–H, forms a white precipitate with ammoniacal AgNO3. Buta-1,3-diene, but-2-yne and but-1-yne all consume 2 mol H2 and decolourise bromine water, but only but-1-yne gives the precipitate. Cyclobutene takes up only 1 mol H2.
Q7 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
A mixture of salicylic acid and 4-methylphenol (p-cresol) is dissolved in diethyl ether. Shaking with which aqueous reagent transfers only the salicylic acid into the aqueous layer?
Answer: (A)
Separation of acids by extraction depends on their pKa values. Carboxylic acids (pKa about 4) dissolve in NaHCO3, which is a weaker base than NaOH, while phenols (pKa about 10) do not. Shake the ether solution with aqueous NaHCO3, separate the layers, and the salicylic acid is in the aqueous layer as its sodium salt.
Q8 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
A racemic carboxylic acid, (±)-RCOOH, is treated with one equivalent of enantiomerically pure (R)-1-phenylethanamine and the mixture is crystallised from a suitable solvent. Which of the following statements about this resolution is correct?
Answer: (D)
Enantiomers have identical physical properties in an achiral environment, so they cannot be separated directly by crystallisation. Converting them into diastereomers fixes this. Reacting (R)- and (S)-RCOOH with a single enantiomer of a chiral base gives (R,R) and (S,R) salts, which are diastereomers with different solubilities. One is crystallised out, and the other stays in the mother liquor. Each salt is then treated with a strong acid to regenerate the free carboxylic acid and the amine hydrochloride. With an achiral base such as NaOH the salts would be enantiomers, and the maximum yield of one enantiomer from a racemate is 50% of its mass.
Q9 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
Rectified spirit (about 95.6% ethanol by mass, rest water) forms an azeotrope, so fractional distillation alone cannot give absolute alcohol. A chemical drying step is therefore carried out before the final distillation. Which reagent and reason is correct?
Answer: (A)
The drying agent must remove water irreversibly without reacting with, or forming a complex with, ethanol. Anhydrous CaCl₂ fails because it forms CaCl₂·nC₂H₅OH. Sodium fails because it reacts with ethanol (2C₂H₅OH + 2Na → 2C₂H₅ONa + H₂). Conc. H₂SO₄ fails because it converts ethanol to ethyl hydrogen sulphate, ether or ethene. Quicklime binds only the water, as CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂. Ca(OH)₂ does not decompose on heating under these conditions, so the ethanol can be distilled from the mixture to give about 99.5% alcohol.
Q10 · Chemistry · Practical Organic Chemistry
After extraction, sodium propanoate is in the aqueous layer. Which reagent should be added to regenerate propanoic acid so that it can be recovered?
Answer: (A)
Carboxylate salts are regenerated into free carboxylic acids by acidification. Adding dilute HCl gives H+ ions that combine with propanoate to form propanoic acid, which can then be extracted into an organic solvent or separated.
