Q1 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
In modern dry cleaning, liquid carbon dioxide with a suitable surfactant is used in place of which solvent?
Answer: (A)
Principle: green chemistry replaces hazardous solvents with safer ones. Apply it: the solvent that carbon dioxide replaces in dry cleaning is the chlorinated hydrocarbon tetrachloroethene. The other three are common solvents but are not the one named in the examples.

CF₂Cl₂ reaches the stratosphere and is exposed to short-wavelength UV radiation there. Which initial photochemical step releases the ozone-depleting species?
Answer: (A)
A UV photon can break only the weakest bond in the molecule. Of the bonds in CF₂Cl₂, the C–Cl bond has the lowest enthalpy, whereas C–F is far stronger. Homolysis of C–Cl gives •CF₂Cl and a chlorine atom, and the chlorine atom enters the catalytic cycle that destroys ozone. Fluorine atoms are not released this way, so the fluorine in CFCs does not contribute to depletion.
Q3 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
In the stratosphere, ozone absorbs ultraviolet radiation (O₃ + hν → O₂ + O), and the oxygen atoms then re-form ozone (O + O₂ + M → O₃ + M), releasing the energy as heat. Which pair of consequences correctly follows if the stratospheric ozone concentration falls substantially?
Answer: (A)
The ozone layer does two things. It absorbs UV-B (and some UV-C), and the energy it absorbs is released as heat when the oxygen atoms recombine with O₂ to form ozone again. This is why the temperature of the stratosphere rises with altitude. If the ozone concentration falls, less UV-B is absorbed, so more reaches the surface. The same loss means less energy is converted to heat in the stratosphere, so it cools. Unabsorbed radiation does not heat the stratosphere, because it passes through to lower altitudes. The chlorine species do not offset the loss of ozone as UV absorbers.
Q4 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
Which green chemistry principle is most directly served by carrying out a chemical process at room temperature and atmospheric pressure instead of at high temperature and high pressure?
Answer: (A)
Principle: green chemistry asks that the energy requirements of a process be minimised, and conducting reactions at ambient temperature and pressure achieves this. Atom economy, renewable feedstock and biodegradability are properties of the reactants, the balanced equation and the product's structure, and are not changed by the conditions.
Q5 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
A person sleeping in a closed room with a coal fire can die from CO poisoning even though the air in the room still contains about 20% oxygen. Which statement best explains this?
Answer: (A)
Haemoglobin carries oxygen by binding it reversibly at Fe(II). CO binds at the same site and forms carboxyhaemoglobin, which is about 300 times more stable than oxyhaemoglobin. A very small partial pressure of CO therefore ties up a large fraction of haemoglobin, and the blood cannot deliver oxygen. Headache, dizziness and then death follow, although the air has normal oxygen content. CO is not an acid anhydride and does not oxidise haemoglobin iron, and its concentration is far too small to dilute the oxygen in the room.
Q6 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
N2 and O2 make up about 99% of dry air but are not greenhouse gases, whereas CO2, a linear and nonpolar molecule, is one. Which of the following gives the correct reason?
Answer: (A)
The greenhouse effect needs a gas to absorb the infrared radiation emitted by the Earth. A molecular vibration absorbs IR only if the dipole moment changes during the vibration. N2 and O2 are homonuclear diatomics, so their one stretching mode never creates a dipole. CO2 is linear, so its symmetric stretch is IR-inactive. Its asymmetric stretch and its bend do create a changing dipole and absorb IR. Bond strength (dissociation energy) and permanent polarity are not the criteria.
Q7 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
In green chemistry, which of the following is used as a safer solvent for dry cleaning in place of tetrachloroethene (perchloroethylene)?
Answer: (A)
Green chemistry aims to reduce or remove hazardous substances. Traditional dry cleaning uses tetrachloroethene, which is toxic and an environmental pollutant. The green alternative is supercritical carbon dioxide: CO2 becomes a supercritical fluid above its critical temperature (31.1 °C) and pressure (73.8 bar), dissolves oily stains well, and returns to gaseous CO2 when pressure is released, leaving clothes dry and free of solvent residue. Apply the principle: choose the solvent that is non-toxic, recyclable and leaves no hazardous waste.
Q8 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
In the stratosphere, ozone absorbs UV radiation by O₃ + hν → O₂ + O. The oxygen atom then recombines with O₂ in the presence of a third body M: O + O₂ + M → O₃ + M. Taken together, which statement correctly describes the effect of this pair of reactions?
Answer: (A)
Add the two steps: O₃ + hν → O₂ + O and O + O₂ + M → O₃ + M. O₂ and O cancel, leaving O₃ + hν → O₃ + heat. The ozone amount is unchanged, while UV-B and UV-C photon energy is converted to thermal energy by the third body M. This is the reason the stratosphere is warmer at higher altitude. Destruction requires an extra pathway such as O + O₃ → 2O₂, which catalysts like Cl or NO speed up.
Q9 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
Ethane is prepared by the Wurtz reaction: 2CH3Br + 2Na → C2H6 + 2NaBr. A student obtains the maximum possible ethane, a 100% yield, and claims that the process is therefore perfectly efficient in the green-chemistry sense. Using atom economy = (mass of desired product ÷ total mass of reactants in the balanced equation) × 100, which statement is correct? (H = 1, C = 12, Na = 23, Br = 80)
Answer: (D)
Atom economy depends only on the balanced equation. Total reactant mass = 2(95) + 2(23) = 236 g. The desired product, C2H6, is 30 g. Atom economy = 30/236 × 100 ≈ 12.7%. The other 206 g is NaBr. Percentage yield compares the actual product with the theoretical product, so a 100% yield can still go with a very low atom economy. Green chemistry therefore looks at both measures.
Q10 · Chemistry · Environmental Chemistry
Which step of the Chapman mechanism directly forms ozone molecules in the stratosphere?
Answer: (B)
In the Chapman mechanism, UV light splits O2 into oxygen atoms, O2 + hν → O + O. Each oxygen atom then combines with an O2 molecule in the presence of a third body M, which removes excess energy: O + O2 + M → O3 + M. Only the second step forms ozone. The other reactions either make atoms or destroy ozone.
