JEE Advanced 2026, chapter by chapter: what the two papers asked

All 102 questions of JEE Advanced 2026 sorted by chapter. Rigid Body and Optics led Physics, Organic Basics led Chemistry, Trigonometry and Conics led Maths.

JEE Advanced 2026 had 102 questions across its two papers, 34 in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. No chapter got more than five. The heaviest were Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body and Optics in Physics, with five each. The exam was held on 17 May 2026, organised by IIT Roorkee.

We sorted every question from the official papers by chapter ourselves. The IITs do not publish chapter weightage, and another count may place a question differently. To go question by question, see JEE Advanced 2026 on our year-wise page.

What was the pattern of JEE Advanced 2026?

SectionKind of questionMarksPaper 1, per subjectPaper 2, per subject
1Single correct+3 / −144
2Multiple correct+4, partial credit, −145
3Numerical value+4 / 045
4Matching list (Paper 1)+4 / −14none
4Numerical from a passage (Paper 2)+2 / 0none4

That adds up to 60 marks a subject in each paper, 180 a paper and 360 in all. One change from 2025 stands out: a wrong multiple-correct answer cost −1, where it cost −2 the year before. The pattern changes often, so see how JEE Advanced marking works and check the front page of your own paper.

What should you take from this paper?

Do not skip the small chapters. Forty-six of the 48 chapters listed across the three subjects had fewer than five questions. A paper this spread out rewards covering the whole syllabus.

Do not plan from one year. Compare this with JEE Advanced 2025, where the leaders were different, and use the long-run chapter weightage to decide what to study first.

Practise passages. Paper 2 asked four numerical questions a subject from two shared passages, at +2 each. An early mistake in a passage can cost both questions that depend on it.

How hard were the questions?

We rated 22 of the 102 questions easy, 63 medium and 17 hard. By our rating, Chemistry had the most hard questions (7), then Physics (6) and Mathematics (4). These ratings are our own judgement, not an official measure.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions were in JEE Advanced 2026?

102 in our count: 48 in Paper 1 and 54 in Paper 2, split equally between the three subjects.

What was the total mark of JEE Advanced 2026?

360, by adding the marks of each question: 180 in each paper and 60 per subject per paper.

Who conducted JEE Advanced 2026?

IIT Roorkee, on 17 May 2026.

Will JEE Advanced 2027 have the same pattern?

Nobody can say. The pattern has changed often, and the organising IIT does not publish it before the exam. Confirm the rules in the official brochure.
