JEE Advanced 2025, chapter by chapter: what the two papers asked

All 96 questions of JEE Advanced 2025 sorted by chapter. Limits and Continuity, Electrostatics and Oscillations led; no chapter passed four questions in a subject.

JEE Advanced 2025 had 96 questions across its two papers, 32 in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. No chapter got more than four questions. That spread is the main lesson of the paper: 17 chapters appeared in Physics, 20 in Chemistry and 17 in Mathematics, so skipping a chapter costs less than you might fear, but no single chapter can carry you.

The exam was held on 18 May 2025. We sorted every question from the official papers by chapter ourselves. NTA and the IITs do not publish chapter weightage, and another count may place a question differently.

What was the pattern of JEE Advanced 2025?

Kind of questionMarksPaper 1, per subjectPaper 2, per subject
Single correct+3 / −144
Multiple correct+4, partial credit, −234
Numerical value+4 / 068
Matching list+4 / −13none

That adds up to 60 marks a subject in each paper, 180 a paper and 360 in all. The pattern changes from year to year, so read how JEE Advanced marking works rather than planning around these exact numbers.

What should you take from one year's paper?

Do not plan from a single paper. Integral Calculus had only 2 of 32 Mathematics questions in 2025, yet it is the heaviest Mathematics chapter over the long run, at 11% of the subject across 36 papers since 2008. One paper shows what was asked that day. The 18-year chapter weightage is a better guide for what to study first.

Practise numericals seriously. They were 14 of the 32 questions per subject across the two papers, and they carried no negative marking in 2025. That makes them the largest kind in this paper.

Cover the small chapters too. Nearly half of the chapters that appeared had just one question, and those questions were worth the same as any other of their kind.

How hard were the questions?

We rated 21 of the 96 questions easy, 59 medium and 16 hard. Mathematics had the most we rated hard (7), then Physics (5) and Chemistry (4). These ratings are our own judgement, not an official measure, and how hard a paper feels also depends on its length.

What this count leaves out

This post covers the 2025 papers only. For the 2026 papers, see JEE Advanced 2026, question by question.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions were in JEE Advanced 2025?

96 in our count: 48 in each paper, with 16 per subject per paper.

What was the total mark of JEE Advanced 2025?

360, by adding the marks of each question: 180 in each paper and 60 per subject per paper.

Which chapter had the most questions in JEE Advanced 2025?

Three chapters had four questions each, the most in the paper: Oscillations and Waves, and Electrostatics, in Physics, and Limits, Continuity and Differentiability in Mathematics.

Will the JEE Advanced 2027 pattern be the same?

Nobody can say. The pattern has changed often, and the organising IIT does not publish it before the exam. Confirm the rules in the official brochure on the JEE Advanced website.
