What to choose after Class 10: streams and where each one leads

Science, Commerce or Humanities after Class 10? Which stream leads to NEET, JEE, CLAT and CUET, what each exam actually asks for, and how to decide calmly.

Choose the stream that keeps open the exam or course you actually want. Medicine needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology, engineering needs Mathematics with Physics and Chemistry, while law and most other degrees are open from any stream.

Last checked on 1 November 2026. Each exam publishes its rules every year. We cite the most recent official documents we could read, and you should check the current one before you decide.

Which stream leads to which exam?

ExamLeads toStream you need
NEET (UG)M.B.B.S. and B.D.S.Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English
JEE (Main) Paper 1B.E. and B.Tech. at NITs, IIITs and other institutesScience with Mathematics, in practice. The paper tests Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
JEE (Advanced)IITsOpen to the top 2,50,000 in JEE (Main) Paper 1
CLAT UGFive-year law degrees at 26 National Law UniversitiesAny stream. The stated condition is 45% in Class 12, or 40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates
CUET (UG)Bachelor's courses at central and other participating universitiesAny stream to sit the test. The university sets the subject rules for each course

What does the Science stream keep open?

Science with Mathematics (PCM) leads to JEE and engineering. Science with Biology (PCB) leads to NEET. Some schools let you take both. Jamia's senior secondary schools and AMU's schools, for example, list Mathematics and Biology as options, though a school may not be able to give every subject.

Science students can still sit CLAT and most CUET papers later. So Science closes few doors. It also asks more of you, and there is no point in choosing it only because others expect you to.

What does Commerce keep open?

Commerce leads to B.Com., B.B.A. and related degrees. Many of these use CUET or a university's own test. Commerce students can also take CLAT, since it asks for marks in Class 12 and not a stream.

Think about Mathematics early. Some courses and subject choices look for it in Class 12. At Jamia's schools in 2026-27, taking Applied Mathematics in Commerce needed at least 60 percent in Mathematics in Class 10.

What does Humanities keep open?

Humanities, also called Arts, leads to B.A. degrees, law, teaching and many other paths. CUET lets you choose your test papers, up to five including languages, whatever subjects you took in Class 12. Your target university may still set conditions for a course. CLAT is open to you too, and its paper tests reading, reasoning and current affairs, not school subjects.

Can I change my mind later?

Partly. Three facts help.

  • NEET after PCM. The 2026 NEET bulletin says candidates may qualify by studying Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, even as additional subjects after Class 12 from a recognised board, with proof of passing. This is possible, but it is a long extra step, and rules can change.
  • JEE has a year limit. For JEE (Main) 2027, only those who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or who appear in 2027, are eligible. So do not count on trying it many years later.
  • CLAT UG has no upper age limit for CLAT 2027. CUET (UG) 2026 also had no age limit, but individual universities may set one.

How do I decide if I am not sure?

These questions are our suggestions, not rules from any exam body.

  1. Which subject do you read about when no one is forcing you? That counts for more than your marks in one exam.
  2. Can you do Mathematics for two more years, with effort? If the honest answer is no, do not choose PCM for its name.
  3. How does your family feel about the length and cost of the path? Medicine and engineering preparation can take years. Ask openly.
  4. Which subjects does your nearby school actually teach well? A good teacher in one subject can matter more than a famous stream.
  5. Have you spoken to someone who is one or two years ahead on this path? Ask them about a normal day, not just the result.

Avoid deciding from a single conversation or a relative's advice alone. Pick the stream that still looks right after a week.

Frequently asked questions

Does a low Class 10 score stop me from taking Science?

It depends on your school. Jamia's schools in 2026-27 asked for 60 percent for Science, while AMU's asked for 45 percent in English, Science and Mathematics together. Ask your school.

Is PCMB a good way to keep everything open?

It keeps both NEET and JEE open, but it means more to study at once. Choose it if you truly cannot decide and you have the time, and if your school offers it.

Can a Commerce student become a lawyer?

Yes. CLAT does not list a required stream, and Jamia's B.A. LL.B. (Hons) accepted any discipline in 2026-27. Check the current rules before you apply.

Do all universities use CUET?

No. It is used by central and participating universities, and even they may use it for only some courses. Jamia and AMU are examples of this.
