Bihar STET: who needs it, the two papers, and what we could confirm

Bihar STET is the eligibility test for government teaching posts in Classes 9 to 12. Who needs Paper I or II, how TRE uses it, and what to check officially.

The Bihar Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) is the eligibility test conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). You need Paper I to teach Classes 9 and 10, and Paper II to teach Classes 11 and 12, in school teacher recruitment through the Bihar Public Service Commission.

Last checked on 1 November 2026. We could not open the full official STET rules. The board's STET notice with the rules was not available to us, and the board's secondary site could not be opened. So this guide is short, and it tells you what to read yourself.

Who needs STET?

The clearest rule we could read comes from the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), in its TRE-4.0 advertisement, No. 15/2026, dated 22 September 2026. BPSC requires a pass in a teacher eligibility test as a condition for a school teacher post.

Post in TRE-4.0Test required
Classes 1 to 5CTET Paper I or BTET Paper I
Classes 6 to 8CTET Paper II or BTET Paper II
Classes 9 and 10, and Special School Teacher (Classes 9 and 10)STET Paper I
Classes 11 and 12STET Paper II

So you need STET if you want a Bihar government post at the secondary or higher secondary level. If you want to teach only Classes 1 to 8, this advertisement points to CTET or BTET instead.

Teachers appointed before 2012 who have passed a competency test are a stated exception. They do not need the eligibility test.

Does passing STET give you a job?

No. STET only makes you eligible. A job comes through a separate recruitment, such as BPSC TRE, with its own form, exam and merit list.

What are the qualifying rules?

BPSC says STET Paper I and Paper II holders must meet the minimum marks that BSEB set for that STET. It does not repeat those marks. We could not read BSEB's own STET notice, so we do not state them here. Check the notice for the STET you took, on bsebstet.org.

Other rules you may have heard about, such as how long a certificate stays valid, the pattern of the papers, the subjects and the fee, are also left out. We could not confirm them from an official page. Please read them only in the board's own notice.

When was the latest STET held?

The board's site at bsebstet.org lists STET 2025. Its notices show these dates.

StepDate
Online form, as rescheduled in Notice P.R. 231/202519 to 27 September 2025
Admit card available11 October 2025
Computer Based Test begins14 October 2025

The site also lists links for the STET 2025 result and for objections. BPSC's TRE-4.0 advertisement refers to STET 2026 and gives a separate self-declaration form for those appearing in it, which points to a 2026 round. We did not find BSEB's own STET 2026 notice on the pages we could open. Check bsebstet.org and biharboardonline.com for it.

How do STET 2026 candidates fit into TRE-4.0?

BPSC says candidates who already hold the academic and training qualifications, and who are appearing in STET 2026, may apply for TRE-4.0. They must give a self-declaration when applying. They must also pass STET 2026 before the TRE-4.0 written exam. Without that pass, BPSC says it will not issue an admit card for the written exam.

Frequently asked questions

Can I teach in Classes 6 to 8 with STET?

In TRE-4.0, BPSC asks for CTET Paper II or BTET Paper II for Classes 6 to 8, not STET. Read the current advertisement for the post you want.

Which paper do I need for Class 10 Mathematics?

STET Paper I, under the TRE-4.0 advertisement. Your subject and degree must also match the post. BPSC lists the required degree and training for each subject in the same advertisement.

Where should I apply for STET?

Only through the board's official route. Its notices name bsebstet.org. Be careful with look-alike sites and paid form-filling offers.

Is STET the same as TRE?

No. STET is an eligibility test run by the school board. TRE is recruitment run by BPSC. Our guide on that difference gives more detail, under the title "Bihar STET vs BPSC TRE".
